Nine months ago, Sara Adams awoke with no memory. The man holding her hand told her she’s a member of The Light, a tight-knit religious group led by the terrifying and charismatic Father Gabriel. As a woman in the community of The Light, her duty is to be unquestionably obedient and to submit to the will of her husband.
But as Sara’s memory starts to return and she remembers her past, she sees that everything she’s been told is a lie. The Light is an insidious and dangerous organization, and its corrupting influence reaches well beyond the confines of the remote campus where Sara is being held.
With everything at stake, Sara struggles to sort out her true memories from her indoctrination. The desire to escape consumes her, but who can she trust? And which other followers of The Light were forced into this life, brainwashed to believe they belonged? The more she remembers, the more it becomes clear that Jacob, the man who calls himself her husband, is keeping shattering secrets of his own.
But Sara cannot flee alone, leaving innocents behind. She must fight to extinguish The Light.
**Special thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for supplying my copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.**
In this very suspenseful sequel to Into the Light, Aleatha Romig takes the suspense to a much higher level. Away from the Dark comes with a lot of answers, but also a lot of questions.
The heat builds in this mesmerizing sequel. As Sara and Jacob confront each other, their romance story continues, but in what direction? Will Sara ever forgive Jacob? Is Jacob even who he said he was? Moreover, what will The Light do?
Away from the Dark takes right after Into the Light ended. Jacob must find Sara. Sara had escaped in the prequel book leaving a chaos behind her. Can this chaos pass unnoticed? The heat rises with every step. More twists and turns to come. We find a lot of secrets and a lot of conspiracies. We also see the ugly face of The Light, where money and power are the only language. I actually prefer not to say any more about the plot. I don’t want to spoil if for you.
Away from the Dark is closely linked to its prequel, Into the Light. It’s most preferable to be read as a series. Reading it as a standalone will leave you with so many questions. You have to read Into the Light to understand where Sara and Jacob are coming from.
I loved this book much more than Into the Light. The pace in Away from the Dark is much faster with the tension rising at every corner. It’s a very suspenseful book. I was literally on the edge of my seat. There’s also more to the romance between Sara and Jacob, though some of this sounded unrealistic to me. However, it was fun to read.
I had some issues with the book ending. Though it was good, it wasn’t clear to me whether it was an open ending style or a cliffhanger waiting for upcoming installments to continue the story. In all cases, it was good.
